Yoobi Mini Masters: DIY Binoculars for Your I Spy Home Adventure

Create your very own I Spy adventure with these fun and easy DIY binoculars! Erica Domesek, founder of P.S. I Made This, showed us how! You can view her Yoobi Mini Masters class here.

What you’ll need:

  • 1 paper towel roll or 2 toilet paper rolls
  • Scissors
  • Stapler
  • Hole punch or sharp tool
  • String or yarn
  • Anything for decoration! Glitter, mod podge, paint, markers, washi tape, etc.

Step 1: Recycle and repurpose! If using a paper towel roll, cut two equal-sized pieces from the tube. These will be the length of your binoculars. If you’re using toilet paper rolls, then skip this step!

Step 2: Out with the old, in with the new. Paint or color your two rolls. Add some detail with a washi tape border or glitter accents!

Step 3: Put it together! Press the two long sides of the rolls together. Take a stapler and squeeze it through the rolls (the top of the stapler in one roll and the bottom in the other). Attach the two rolls together by pressing the stapler down from the inside. Flip the stapler to the other end of the rolls to secure the other side.

Step 4: Make room for the string. Using a hole punch or sharp tool, poke a hole on the outside of one side of the tube. Make another hole parallel to the first on the second tube.

Step 5: Try it on! Take your string and weave it through the first hole. Tie a double knot on the inside of the tube, so the string doesn’t slip out. Snip off any excess string from the knot. Measure the length of your string so that it loops comfortably around your neck and tie the same knot through your second hole.

Step 6: "I Spy with my little eye..." Make your own I Spy checklist! Search for stuffed animals, colors, and even shapes using things around the house.
